List of Top Ten Highest Grossing Film

#10 Transformers: Age of Extinction

Transformers: Age of Extinction was a box office success like its predecessor despite being panned by critics and became the only film of 2014 to cross the $1 billion mark. It grossed $245,439,076 in the United States and $841,850,000 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1,087,404,499. Also directed by the Action Director Michael Bay, It is both a sequel to 2011's Dark of the Moon and a soft reboot of the franchise, and takes place five years later, after the Decepticon invasion of Chicago.

#9 Skyfall

Being the twenty-third James Bond film, featuring Daniel Craig in his third performance as James Bond, this is the first Movie of its kind to gross an amount of $1,108,561,013 worldwide. The story centers on Bond investigating an attack on MI6; the attack is part of a plot by former MI6 operative Raoul Silva to humiliate, discredit and kill M as revenge against her for betraying him. This was the last movie for Judi Dench for her role as M.

#8 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

A pattern is obviously emerging here: Like Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 before it, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was the last in a series and a massive moneymaker. Directed by Peter Jackson, the movie rounded out the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was the only movie of the three to break the billion dollar mark where it fetched a worldwide sum of $1,119,929,521.

#7 Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Even being called "the worst movie ever" couldn't keep an action powerhouse (not to mention notable franchise and beloved toy) from raking in over $1 billion. A Michael Bay mishmash, the movie proved yet again how much a recognizable name (Transformers) and action-packed debacle (robots fighting to the death) can send people all over the world racing to the movie theater. The producers took home $1,123,794,079.

#6 Iron Man 3

Obviously the third in the franchise, this Iron Man also came into the box office with a running start: Before the first ticket was even sold, audiences had two previous movies as well as a comic book series to whet their appetites. Directed by Shane Black, the man behind the Lethal Weapon movies, Iron Man 3 was yet another box office action extravaganza which grossed $1,215,439,994.

#5 Frozen

Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.  It is the 53rd animated feature produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen, the film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal pet reindeer, and a naive snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. It ranks as the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, the highest-grossing film of 2013, and the third highest-grossing film in Japan. It made $1,279,852,693 worldwide and still earning well till date after its release in winter 2013.

#4 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

The last film in the Harry Potter franchise (or at least the last film for now), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 had a beloved book series and seven previous movies to give it a running start at the box office. Directed by David Yates (who did a handful of the Harry Potters), this 2011 movie was the cherry on top of more than a decade of Harry Potter fanfare where it hit a toll of $1,341,511,219.

#3 The Avengers

No. 3 on this list announces the arrival of Joss Whedon along with the arrival of superhero action movies. Released in 2012, The Avengers was a star-packed, franchise-uniting extravaganza that crammed all of Marvel lovers' favorite action heroes into one two-and-a-half-hour romp that garnered a heavy load of $1,518,594,910. As this list proves, action movies spell universal success.

#2 Titanic

The second incredible feather in James Cameron's cap, Titanic was released in 1997 and was another Cameron-written and -directed masterpiece with James Cameron’s Melodious musical. When looking at the rest of this highest-grossing list, it's pretty incredible that one man is behind the top two films and even more incredible that he broke box office records with two films that are, at heart, love stories. This movie at its time swallowed a huge gulp of $2,186,772,302.

#1 Avatar

The No. 1 grossing movie of all time, Avatar put high-quality 3-D on the movie map and officially knighted James Cameron as an unstoppable force in box office money-making. Cameron wrote and directed the movie, a CGI/real people romance that visually blew audiences' minds all over the world. He also did not fail to choose the most suitable music composer, James Horner for his masterpiece. This movie was critically acclaimed for its CG which gave a breakthrough in film making industry. The film also won 73 awards and 143 nominations and also fetched a whopping amount of $2,787,965,087(RM 9,618,479,550) in the box office worldwide. And for the record I watched this movie over a hundred times.
